Early life and joining the priesthood

Mgr Martin Micallef, son of John Micallef and Jane née Bugeja, was born in Luqa on the 10th of November, 1967.

He began his studies at the Luqa Primary School, continued at the Minor Seminary in Rabat, and the New Lyceum in Msida. In September 1987, he entered the Archbishop’s Major Seminary to prepare for the priesthood. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta in 1990, another in Theology in 1994, and a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology in 1996.

He was ordained a deacon on the 25th of November 1994 in the Parish of Luqa and ordained a priest on the 5th of July 1996. He served as vice-parish priest at Tal-Ibraġ parish, in Swieqi and later as parish priest of Ħal Għaxaq from 2000 to 2005, and Marsascala from 2005 to 2008.

Recent achievements

Since 2004, he has served as a member of the National Commission for Persons with Disability, today the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD).

He was appointed Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza on 1 October 2008 by Archbishop Mgr Paul Cremona OP.

In August 2024, Archbishop Monsignor Charles J. Scicluna also appointed him as Episcopal Vicar for Diakonia, and in January 2025, Monsignor ad honorem of the Metropolitan Chapter of Malta.
